The Village Raid

Shot 1

Cinematography: PS SR into MLS of the group of vikings rowing, shot from on the boat, very slow Z deeper into the boat where Amleth is sitting
Mise-en-scène: The group of vikings, including Amleth, all look uniform, they look like a pack of animals of the same hide, same fur. Their clothing is similar, most of them wear the headband with the same long hairstyle and beard. It even adds to the uniformity the fact that they are rowing in sync.

Shot 2

Cinematography: After the vikings shoot down some men on another boat, CT to MCU of Amleth.
Mise-en-scène: The background is blurred and the shot focuses on Amleth and he looks rugged and dirty, mud/dirt on his face, he has a stern look on his face and his eyes are focused slightly under the camera where the back of the man in front of him would be, he looks deep in thought and in a focused, a meditative state, but not the kind of meditation that is calm, but rather the meditation of a warrior before battle. The scenery around him looks calm as well, the river and trees.

Shot 3

Cinematography: Slow Z into LA MS/MCU/CU of Amleth yelling at the top of his lungs.
Mise-en-scène: This is a pre-battle ritual of the warriors. Wolf’s head worn on his head to amplify the animal symbolism, cultural necklace and arm bracelet like the ones worn by his father, he is releasing his inner primal/animalistic instincts in a ritual together with the men around him and letting out some manic expressions even rolling his eyes back later in the shot.

Shot 4

Cinematography: HH TS following the vikings creeping up on a hill looking at the village walls.
Mise-en-scène: They look like a pack of wolves especially with the way they are almost crawling and the hide they’re wearing on their backs, as well as the way they move together in a group. The shot shows the wooden walls in the distance behind a fog but it also means the vikings are hiding in the fog or behind it from the enemy’s POV.

Shot 5

Cinematography: HH camera moves SR to the side of the vikings to a LS of Amleth raising his axe and the vikings charging into battle SR.
Mise-en-scène: The vikings are charging into battle and Amleth leads them with a battle cry while raising his axe. The shake of the camera conveys the action and intensity of the scene and them charging toward the walls. Again, the men all look similar with the same hairstyles and clothing (or lack thereof).

Shot 6

Cinematography: MS of Amleth tracking a man on a horse below him.
Mise-en-scène: Amleth is like a predator from above tracking its prey below as he is getting ready to pounce on them. His stance is brutish and his muscles are building and covered in blood splatters.

Shot 7

Cinematography: MLS TS of Amleth walking
Mise-en-scène: He is moving like a brute, muscles flexed, shoulders hunched, and arms out, villagers frantically running around him compared to his slow, calm but strong movements. The shadow on him in contrast to the background creates a scary, menacing aura around Amleth.

Shot 8

Cinematography: T up from him biting his victim, LA MCU of Amleth howling
Mise-en-scène: Amleth is howling like a wolf after literally ravaging his enemy with his teeth. Blood around his mouth and the lighting again creates a menacing look to him.

Shot 9

Cinematography: CT to LS the group of vikings after the battle.
Mise-en-scène: The vikings are gathered like a pack of dogs, the wolf hides back on their shoulders and blood all over their bodies and weapons, like wolves would have on their fur and muzzle after a hunt.

Shot 10

Cinematography: PS SR to MCU of Amleth in front of a hut.
Mise-en-scène: Slightly out of focus hut behind him, his eyes and most of his body are in shadow with some parts of his figure glistening in sweat. There is blood on his face and his expression is stern, almost angry, staring straight if not almost into the camera.
